The Maze Runner – James Dashner

Little over 2 years ago I read “The Maze Runner” written by James Dashner and I was captivated by the whole series. After picking up my copy of the book I immediately went home, sat in my reading corner and read continuously in one sitting the entire book. It took me little over 4 hours and I just had to know what happened next, so I found myself going back to the book store to pick up the second and third book in the series.

The first book was written quite well as the characters in the Glade had no memories of their former life before entering into the Glade; only their names.  As the book starts you are bought straight into the world of the protagonist Thomas and him first waking up in a box which is being taken up to the Glade along with supplies. The Glade gets one boy each month with the supplies. As you read through the book you find out that Thomas just somehow knows that he wants to be a runner, like it has been drilled into him.

One day the box comes up again only this time no supplies and no other boys, but a girl; Teresa who changes everything. No one else will come into the Glade. Teresa as a character was not what you would think. After she awakens from a coma she and Thomas can talk to each other; telepathically. She keeps mentioning “WICKED is good”. Minho another runner gets stuck in the maze along with Alby who has been poisoned and Thomas runs in as the maze doors are closing to help them. Minho and Thomas work together to survive the night in the maze.

As the book progresses it pulls you into the world of the Gladers and what they do to try to survive. Dashner has done well in captivating the reader from the first few chapters and bringing you through to the next books. Is WICKED really good?
