SUMMARY

Getting pregnant after a one-night stand with my brotherโs best friend was never part of the plan.
Weโre talking about Foster Davis here.
Chicago Colts closing pitcher.
The broody king of one-word answers.
And the man everyone knows keeps one foot out the door.
Surprisingly, when two pink lines turn my world upside down, Foster doesnโt run. He steps in, he shows up, and he insists we do this together.
Pretending weโre fine is easy. Pretending this is just about the baby? Not so much.
Because Foster is gentle when no oneโs watching.
Because he looks at me like Iโm something worth protecting.
Because the walls heโs built start to crackโand Iโm the one heโs letting inside.
Our arrangement was supposed to be simple. Boundaries were set. Co-parents and no catching feelings.
Okay, maybe a few sex lessons were added in too. Bad idea, I know.
Because the more time I spend with Foster Davis, the harder it is to remember why I ever thought he was the risky choice.

REVIEW
After finishingย The Hotshot, I didn’t even hesitate before jumping straight intoย The Wild Card. I was so curious about Callie and Foster that I just had to see how their story unfolded. They’d already caught my attention in the previous book and I couldn’t wait to finally get inside their heads and watch their relationship develop.
One thing I’ve realised after reading two Piper Rayne books is just how easy they are to read. Her writing flows effortlessly and before I knew it, I’d read far more of this book than I’d planned. It’s exactly the kind of romance I like picking up when I want something entertaining that I know I’m going to fly through.
I really enjoyed both Callie and Foster as main characters. Foster especially surprised me in the best way. There was so much more to him than I expected and I loved seeing the layers of his personality come out as the story progressed. Callie was equally easy to root for and I liked how independent and determined she was. Together they had great chemistry and I genuinely enjoyed watching them slowly figure each other out.
Some of my favourite moments weren’t even the big romantic gestures. They were the quieter scenes where they were simply talking, teasing each other or learning to trust one another. Those moments made the relationship feel believable and reminded me why I enjoy sports romances so much.
I also loved getting to catch up with the characters fromย The Hotshot. One of my favourite things about interconnected romance series is seeing previous couples pop back into the story and it made the world feel familiar without taking the focus away from Callie and Foster.
The reason this ended up being a 3 star read for me is that I never felt completely emotionally invested. I enjoyed the romance, but I kept waiting for that one moment where everything would just click and I’d fall completely in love with the story. It never quite happened. There were parts where the pacing felt a little uneven and while I liked the relationship, it didn’t leave the same lasting impression that I’d hoped it would.
That being said, I still had a really enjoyable time reading it. Not every romance has to become a new favourite and this was one of those books that was simply fun to spend a few hours with. Piper Rayne continues to have a writing style that’s incredibly easy to get lost in and I’m definitely interested in continuing with the series.
Overall,ย The Wild Cardย was a sweet, enjoyable sports romance with two likeable characters that I’d been looking forward to getting to know better. While it didn’t completely win me over, I was still happy to finally read Callie and Foster’s story.
This was a solidย 3 star readย for me. It may not have been my favourite in the series so far, but it was still an enjoyable romance and I’m looking forward to seeing where Piper Rayne takes this series next.
