Every now and then a book completely surprises me and The Ending Writes Itself was one of those reads. It has easily become one of my favourite new releases of 2026 and I’m so glad I finally picked it up after pulling it out of my TBR jar of unread physical books. Sometimes leaving your next read up to chance really pays off because this is probably a book I wouldn’t have reached for otherwise.

I’ll admit mystery and thriller novels aren’t genres I read very often. I’m much more likely to pick up a romance or fantasy, so I wasn’t entirely sure if this would be for me. But from the moment the story began unfolding, I found myself completely invested in figuring out what was actually going on. Every time I thought I’d worked it out, another twist came along and completely changed my perspective. It genuinely felt like the book was always one step ahead of me.

The best comparison I can make is that it gave me serious Knives Out vibes. There was that same feeling of constantly questioning every character, second guessing every clue and wondering who was telling the truth. It became one of those books where I’d tell myself I was only going to read one more chapter, only to end up reading several because I needed to know what happened next.

That being said, I do think the first half was a little slow.

It took me a while to settle into the story and there were moments where I wondered if it was going to live up to the praise I’d been hearing. The early chapters spend a lot of time introducing the characters and setting everything into place, which is important in hindsight but while I was reading it, I found myself wishing things would move along a little quicker. There were even a few moments where I felt slightly bored.

Then the second half happened.

It’s like someone flipped a switch. The pacing increased dramatically, the revelations started coming one after another and suddenly I couldn’t put the book down. Every chapter seemed to end with another question or another shocking reveal and I loved that I never really knew where the story was heading. Just when I thought I’d finally pieced everything together, the narrative would pull the rug out from under me again.

I also really enjoyed the joint writing of VE Schwab and Cat Clarke’s writing. It felt incredibly polished and cinematic, making it easy to picture every scene as it unfolded. The dialogue flowed naturally, the clues were cleverly woven into the story without feeling too obvious and the suspense built steadily until everything came crashing together in the final act. Looking back after finishing the book, I could appreciate just how carefully everything had been constructed.

The reason this wasn’t quite a five star read for me comes down to that slower opening. While I understand why it was necessary to establish the characters and the mystery, I think the first half could have been a little bit faster paced. Once the story found its stride, though, it became incredibly difficult to put down.

Overall, The Ending Writes Itself was a fantastic surprise and one of my standout reads of the year. Even as someone who doesn’t reach for mysteries or thrillers very often, I found myself completely hooked by the twists, the suspense and the constant feeling that anything could happen next. If you’re looking for a mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end, this is one I’d definitely recommend.
